A Collaboration Process
The strategy was developed through sustained collaboration with iwi, local and central government, community groups, and stakeholders. This collective process ensured the outcomes reflect shared aspirations, grounded in cultural integrity and regional identity.
Cultural and Ecological Layers
Research combined document review, site studies, and desktop analysis to identify Taranaki’s cultural and ecological assets. Sketching was used as a design tool to reveal insights and relationships, helping to shape a strategy rooted in both story and land.
Narrative as Guide
At the heart of the strategy is a recognition that journeys in Taranaki are shaped by more than geography—they are shaped by narrative. The mana of Taranaki provides the guiding thread, ensuring that tracks and trails are imbued with meaning and resonance for all who walk them.
Vision and Nine Key Projects
The overarching vision sets out a framework to 2040, realised through nine key projects. These projects provide practical steps to integrate cultural narrative, ecological restoration, and community involvement into the growing tracks and trails network.
A Transformative Pathway
The Taranaki Tracks and Trails Strategy demonstrates how trails can be more than routes—they can be transformative journeys. By weaving together ecological care, cultural stories, and community energy, the strategy offers a future where every path is part of a larger journey of connection and respect.
