Around 600 years ago, Pūkaki was a wild, untamed lake, with surrounding lands sustaining a rich abundance of native habitat and wildlife. The Guide Hill Station interpretation project invites visitors to see this landscape through time—its thriving wetlands, the arrival of merino farming, and today’s restoration efforts. A series of outdoor panels creates an open-air museum across the tussocklands, sharing stories of ecology, culture and place. The design helps people connect with the land’s heritage and understand how working farms can also nurture biodiversity and memory, weaving past, present and future into one wild narrative.
