Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu | Lincoln University
Ōtautahi
THE QUESTION
Ngāi Tahu saw the potential of this project to offer more than a roof over tenants’ heads, and sought an innovative re-imagining of social housing in Christchurch. What benefits can such developments provide beyond basic housing?
THE OUTCOME
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Social Housing division are converting a small green pocket in Addington into a three household development in Addington, Christchurch.
Project Outline

This project re-imagines the potential of housing by creating an inner-city garden for native birds and sparking ecological urban renewal.Guided by the aspiration of caring for native species, it weaves landscape elements into Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu’s social housing values, with decking subtly aligned to Aoraki. A detailed planting strategy and design has been developed to guide the project’s implementation and ensure these values are carried through in practice.
