Eden Project Christchurch Ōtautahi: Ki Uta Ki Tai

Eden Project UK | Matapopore Charitable Trust | water For Life Trust
Ōtautahi Christchurch
THE QUESTION
There is great potential to connect people with the red zone. What is the potential offered by our river to remake Christchurch as a destination, one based on a restored environment, where biodiversity thrives and where people live, work and play – gateway into our true nature.
THE OUTCOME
This eco-tourism development explores the role of water in sustaining life on this planet, and is proposed for earthquake-damaged land along the Avon Ōtākaro River in Christchurch, New Zealand.

This project is shaped by landscape, water, and the wider environment, reconnecting Christchurch to its river and the sea. A collaborative, programme-based masterplan—developed with residents, iwi and community groups—creates a dynamic waterscape and functional ecosystem, including wetlands acting as a “liquid lung” to manage floods during major storm events.

An experience map tells the story of water’s journey from mountains to the ocean, inviting people to explore interactive spaces like the Rain Room, Moss Room, and Rainbow Room. These sensory, movement-responsive experiences celebrate Aotearoa’s unique species and rainfall. The vision was developed in partnership with the UK Eden team, including Sir Tim Smit and Andrew Whalley of Grimshaw Architects.
